Reading
Reading
Reading is one of the most important things that children can be doing to give themselves a great start in life. At Malvern Parish children in Y3 should read at home for at least 20 minutes daily.
Although many children in KS2 are able to read independently, we do ask that they read with an adult when possible. Studies show that this is a lovely way to help your child to feel comfortable, secure, confident and relaxed – and it can be great fun to do together.
The children will be bringing home at least 2 books.
Colour-banded book
This book will be at the correct phonics or decoding or comprehension stage for your child. We expect your child to be able to decode (read) most of the words in their book and blend sounds to read any new words. They should also understand the meaning of most words as they are used in the context of the book.
Each time your child reads or you read with your child, please record this in their reading record book. We will then know when the children are ready to change their books. To change their books they just need to pop their books in the basket in the morning.
Reading for pleasure books and school library books
The children will also bring home another book. The idea of having another book (or two) is to develop the children’s enjoyment of reading and give them access to a wider range of books at school. These books may be borrowed from our class libraries or school library. We ask the children to read a range of texts including poetry, fiction and non-fiction. They can of course read books from
home, comics, newspapers, graphic novels, recipe books – a good mix is our aim!
As reading is so important, we have recently invested funds into our school library so there are lots of lovely books of all types to choose from. Please do ensure that books are cared for and that they are returned or re-issued regularly.
Once the children have settled into year 3, they will have the opportunity to use the library more often and will be able to go and change their library books regularly during the week.
We like to celebrate children who are reading at home and rewards are given out weekly for those who are making an effort to regularly read to an adult.
Year 3 Reading Books
These books are recommended for year 3 children. They are from Pie Corbett's Reading Spine. We will be setting a challenge for the children to have a go reading them all by the end of the year. There are copies of the books in the classroom for the children to access.
