Reading
Reading
In Year 2, we continue to develop children's decoding, prosody and comprehension skills. During small group reading sessions in class, the children will read books that match their phonic knowledge. The books that children are reading will be sent home on a Monday and must be returned to school on Thursday. Children will also have a colour banded book which they are encouraged to read at home three times before swapping it themselves, this is part of their morning routine.
Phonics Book OR Colour Banded Book
-
Decoding - Sound out the words and read through the book. Be sure to talk about the title of the book and practise any sounds or words on the inside cover (a feature of some phonics books).
-
Prosody - Children will read the book again, developing their fluency but with a focus on expression. It is here where we look closely at the different punctuation to aid prosody.
-
Comprehension -Show an understanding of what you have read . Some books have questions in the front or back to help with developing comprehension skills. Below are the skills that we focus on:
Retrieval - Answering questions where the information is in the text and needs to be retrieved.
Vocabulary - Explore the meaning of words and look at how authors and poets have chosen to use certain words and phrases.
Sequencing - Sequence events from a text in order.
Inference - Look for clues within a text that might help you to think about how someone might be feeling or why something is happening.
Prediction - Based on what has been read, what might you predict happens next?
Sharing Book
The idea of having a ‘sharing’ book is to develop an enjoyment of reading. Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
The children’s sharing book only needs to be read once.
School Library Book
To further encourage children’s enjoyment for reading and in order for them to access a wider range of books at school, the children will be borrowing books from the school library starting in the summer term.
Year 2 Reading Books
These books are recommended for year 2 children. They are from Pie Corbett's Reading Spine. We will be setting a challenge for the children to have a go reading them all by the end of the year. There are copies of these books in the classroom for the children to access.
