Reading

Even though most children can read independently, it is still really important for them to read regularly. They should be reading for around 20 minutes every day. It is good for children to experience reading in different ways:

  • Enjoying a book on their own (every day)
  • Reading to an adult (several times a week)
  • Talking about what is being read (several times a week)
  • Listening to an adult read to them (regularly)

The documents below give some suggestions for age appropriate books and questions that you can use to discuss the books being read.

It is good for children to read a variety of books and texts: story books, information books, newspapers and magazines, recipe books, instructions, leaflets.

Year 5 Reading Spine

Below are some books that we have selected that we think will offer your children a range of reading experiences over the year. We have copies available in our classroom and school library and encourage you to share these together.
